How Color Analysis Works
From 4 Seasons to 12 Types
The concept of seasonal color analysis originated with the Swiss art teacher Johannes Itten. In a well-known experiment with his students, Itten asked them to paint self-portraits using colors that felt natural to their appearance. He then examined their faces and accurately identified the palettes they had chosen. From this observation he grouped colors according to the four seasons, matching them to the dominant hues found in nature at each time of year.
Itten’s four-season framework was a valuable starting point, but in practice it proved too broad. People assigned to the same season could look strikingly different from one another. Modern color analysis addresses this by expanding the system to 12 color types, organized into 6 color groups, each containing two sister types:
- Light – Light Spring and Light Summer
- Warm – Warm Spring and Warm Autumn
- Clear – Clear Spring and Clear Winter
- Cool – Cool Summer and Cool Winter
- Deep – Deep Autumn and Deep Winter
- Soft – Soft Summer and Soft Autumn
During an in-person consultation, colored drapes are held near your face to determine your key color characteristic – whether it is hue (warm or cool), value (light or dark), or chroma (clear or muted). From there, the remaining attributes are assessed and you are matched to one of the 12 types.
The Barbara Meunier Method
Even 12 types cannot capture every individual nuance. The Barbara Meunier method, developed by the French colorist of the same name, takes personalization further by building an individual color passport for each client.
Instead of fabric drapes, this method uses color cards that are carefully matched to your complexion. Colors are sorted into three categories: definite “yes,” definite “no,” and “maybe.” Your color passport then organizes the results into:
- Base – the color closest to your face
- Dominant – the main color in your outfit or its upper portion
- Accents – colors that appear in smaller details and accessories
By combining the 12-type framework with the Meunier method, we arrive at the most individualized palette possible – one that is uniquely yours.
